What is the Difference Between a Smoke Machine, Haze Machine and Low Fog Machine?

Aug. 26, 2024

We often get asked about the differences between these three special effects machines. To help clarify, we've put together this quick guide to highlight the key distinctions and help you choose the right machine for your desired effect.

Smoke Machine

Smoke machines, also known as fog machines, use a special fluid to generate thick white smoke, creating a dramatic visual effect. Many models include a remote control, allowing you to adjust the volume and duration of the smoke produced. Smoke machines produce a similar effect to low fog machines, however the heated smoke produced by smoke machines rises and dissipates around the room, whereas low fog machines produce cold liquid particles and the fog remains close to the ground.

Input: Smoke fluid

Output: smoke

Particles: smoke

Use smoke machines for: shows, concerts, parties, spooky effects. Use when you want the whole room to be smoky, rather than just on the ground (low fog machine).

Low Fog Machine

A low fog machine, similar to dry ice machines, produces a thick, opaque fog that stays close to the ground, creating a "walking on air" effect. This effect is achieved by cooling the fog fluid into liquid particles. Unlike a hazer, which subtly diffuses mist to enhance lighting effects like beams or lasers, a low fog machine generates a more intense burst of fog for a dramatic visual impact, akin to a smoke machine.

There are two main types of low fog machines:

- Dry Ice Machine: Uses solid dry ice and water. This method is simpler but offers a shorter run time compared to cryogenic machines.

- Cryogenic Machine: Utilizes liquid CO2 gas, providing a longer-lasting effect.

Input: Dry Ice or Liquid CO2 Gas (depending on the machine type)

Output: Low-lying fog

Particles: Liquid droplets

Ideal for: Weddings (especially for the first dance), shows, theaters, Halloween parties.

Haze Machine

Haze machines, also known as "hazers," can be oil-based or water-based and are designed to enhance lighting effects. They produce a fine, subtle haze with a long "hang" time, meaning the particles linger in the air for an extended period before dissipating. This makes them ideal for shows and concerts, where the haze allows lighting rays and patterns to become more visible. Unlike smoke or low fog machines, haze machines create a much finer, less noticeable effect, making them perfect for emphasizing light effects without the thick, opaque presence of smoke.

Input: Haze fluid

Output: Fine mist/haze

Particles: Liquid droplets

Ideal for: Shows, concerts, festivals, and any event where you want to highlight lighting effects or create a misty atmosphere, without the dense, opaque effect of a smoke or low fog machine.

When choosing between different smoke fog machines, there is a significant difference between budget models and professional-grade equipment. For high-quality and reliable performance at your event, opt for professional-grade machines. While this doesn't always mean spending more, you'll often receive better value for your investment. Professional-grade machines typically feature a continuous automatic cycle, allowing them to operate consistently without needing to pause.
